The husband in this family is the refugee. He fled Eritrea to Ethiopia during war in Eritrea. After living in Ethiopia, he migrated to the United States. Friends introduced him via telephone to his future wife who lived in Ethiopia. They communicated by phone for some time, realizing that this was a good match. The husband then traveled back to Ethiopia to spend time in person with this young lady. They married in Ethiopia and he returned to the United States. It wasn’t until four years later that the wife was able to join him in the United States.
The wife tells that following the war, both countries, Eritrea and Ethiopia became almost as one country. The conflict continued in both countries. Her family owned a coffee farm, where she grew up. Coffee beans are pictured on this quilt. She still feels Ethiopian coffee is the best! She has become a skilled seamstress and is now employed in the sewing profession.
